“I’m a keeper” exclaimed Andrea Orozco, intern for California Cartage Company as she proudly addressed a crowd full of friends, family, and employers. Yesterday afternoon we had the honor of attending the 2011 Culmination Reception and watched as the 54 ITEP summer interns expressed their heartfelt thanks and optimism for the future.
Each intern had the opportunity to speak about their experiences. Nicole Diaz, a GESA student interned for American President Lines won the Workshop Excellence Award. “This internship opened my eyes and broadened my horizons and made me realize that there are so many opportunities out there for me… Thank you ITEP for providing us knowledge of how the real world operates” said Diaz.
Each student used different words but the messages were universal. The students spoke of lessons learned, the value of professionalism, and what it means to be part of a team. Nelly Esqueda (ITA) received the Workshop Perfect Attendance Award and interned for Tesoro Refinery. “Nothing is impossible in life. Martin and Gabby pushed me to strive for the best… I learned that when we step on Tesoro grounds, we are no longer one person but an entire company…ITEP provided the opportunity for internships, and we made it happen” said Nelly. Tesoro was so impressed with Nelly they offered to extend her employment throughout the rest of the year.
We are so proud of each and every one of ITEP’s summer interns. Many thanks to Martin Chavez, Gabriela Perez, the 35 dedicated employers, and all who were involved in making this program possible. These young adults will be heading into the real world job ready and college prepared. Julien Sykes (GSS), winner of the Outstanding Personal Development Award and intern for Watson Land Company, remarked “this experience was priceless…”
