High school sophomores discover exciting careers at GPS Your Future

Over 475 ITEP sophomores from 5 Southern California high schools took over Loker Student Union at CSU, Dominguez Hills to participate in GPS Your Future 2012. Students from Banning, Barstow, Carson, Gardena and San Pedro High School, got an up-close and personal look into the exciting career opportunities in international trade transportation and logistics. Students explored company exhibits and engaged with industry speakers who introduced themto different careers  and taught them how to be successful in the workforce of tomorrow.

After an orientation, students visited the exhibit hall where they interacted with   24 different industries and companies like Keesal Young & Logan, Halcrow, UPS,  and SA Recycling.  Among them was Ernie Mendoza Business Development Manager at Securitas Security Services.  “The event was a great venue to expose our young students to different career paths with industries that are all around. Students were very engaged and got to see that we, the business community, are just normal people with very similar backgrounds to their own.”

After the exhibits, students broke out into small groups to listen to industry speakers who talked about “Workplace Reality” and what it was like to work in their profession.  Tom Good of Matson  presented a Workplace Reality session and commented on keeping your Facebook page professional.”As an employer, I want responsible people working for me. An employee’s actions are a reflection of their company… Prior to a second or third interview, as a part of their due diligence, most employers will conduct criminal background checks, credit checks and they will check your Facebook page as well as other social media. Whatever is out in cyber-space is out there for everyone to see. Including potential employers.”

Over 200 speakers, exhibitors, and volunteers came together to make this career discovery day possible. Thank you to ITEP Board of Director member Julia Nagano for organizing the event and all the speakers, volunteers, exhibitors and the committee for making GPS Your Future a huge success!
